The Telegraph yesterday published the results of its poll to discover the greatest British monarch of all time. The winner, hands down—and not surprisingly, as the poll was taken at the moment of her diamond jubilee—is Elizabeth II, with 35% of the vote.
Queen Victoria came in second in the poll, with a solid 24%.
Interestingly, as third place went to Queen Elizabeth the First with 15% of the vote, nearly 3 out of 4 Britons believe that Britain’s greatest ruler was a woman, while only 1 of 25 consider the greatest ruler to have been a man. (21% of all respondents opted for “don’t know.”) Take that, Henry VIII (#4) and Henry V (#5)!
